Global trade

About the numbers

The numbers are based on information collected TDM (Trade data monitor). The numbers are classified according to valid commodity codes (HS codes). The commodities are also grouped by product types and other attributes.

Values

Product weight in tons: Net weight of the product.

Product weight in tons WFE: Estimated weight when calculating the product weight to whole fish equivalents.

Value in 1000 NOK: The statistical exports value for the goods when passing the border, also called the FOB-value (Free On Board). Taxes, customs or other fees are not included in the statistical value. The import value is normally reported as CIF.

PriceS in NOK/kg: The price is calculated by dividing the statistical value by the product weight.

Updates

The updates vary by country. The Norwegian seafood council does not receive any exact dates for future updates, but we update the numbers as soon as we receive the data from TDM.

About asymmetries in international trade statistics

There are several reasons for inconsistencies in trade data between countries. In a perfect world, exports from country A to country B would perfectly match the imports for country B from country A (mirror statistics). This is rarely the case (bilateral trade asymmetries). There are several reasons for this, and OECD lists some of them:

-Exports and imports are valued differently: Exports in FOB-value, imports in CIF-value.

-Differences in customs regimes

-Confidentiality policies

-Time of recording

-Product classifications

Another important source of discrepancy is the convention that merchandise trade statistics record imports by country of origin, while exports are recorded by country of last known destination. As global production chains become increasingly complex, and goods cross borders several times before reaching the final consumers, this convention means that the recorded exports and imports will not be symmetrical. The difference in attribution of partner country is one of the largest causes of asymmetries in trade statistics.
